The Elk River Railroad Inc. recently filed a verified notice of exemption with Surface Transportation Board to acquire from CSX Transportation and operate a 61-mile line (known as the Elk River Subdivision) between Gilmer and Hartland, W.Va.

The 83-mile short line, which currently leases the line from CSXT and operates on the track, plans to exercise an option to purchase the segment pursuant to a 1989 lease agreement with the Class I.

Both railroads expect to close the transaction by September's end.
