U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently presented its Partnership Award to Norfolk Southern Corp. in recognition of the railroad's efforts in providing emergency response, hazardous-material awareness, and rail-equipment familiarization training to emergency responders throughout the country.


EPA bestows the award to companies, organizations, agencies or individuals that demonstrate exceptional creativity or innovation in emergency preparedness, planning and response.


The agency cited NS' participation as host of the 2002 "Whistle-Stop Tour," a six-day event at which the railroad brought specialized tank cars and instructors, over-the-road and local emergency-response equipment, and exhibits to six cities to provide hands-on responder training.


NS also provided various emergency training programs to more than 4,000 emergency responders and participated in 12 emergency response drills.


Meanwhile, the state of Virginia recently named NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer David Goode the state's 2003 Outstanding Industrialist.


State officials believe Goode has helped NS develop industry-leading technologies that promote safe, reliable service for customers and communities.


Virginia also recognized Goode's efforts to develop technology and infrastructure at NS that help divert traffic from trucks, and information systems that streamline operations and improve transit times — including the country's largest client-server application designed to manage rail-car moves, according to a prepared statement.
