UP targets Nebraska trespassers to clear path for double-track project

Squatters beware. Poised to begin a double-track project in Gering, Neb., Union Pacific Railroad is advising residents who have been illegally using the Class I's right of way to vacate the property. People are parking recreational vehicles and boats, and cultivating gardens on UP's land, according to a prepared statement.

On March 1, UP plans to begin building a second mainline in Gering on the right of way adjacent to the railroad's mainline. The nine-mile section will connect with UP's double-track mainline on each side of Gering.

The project is part of UP's long-running plan to double-track its coal route 165 miles from North Platte, Neb., to Horse Creek, Wyo., in the Powder River Basin.

UP expects to complete the Gering project in seven months.
