CN set to offer 'scheduled' intermodal service

Canadian National Railway Co. plans to apply its scheduled railroad concept to intermodal through Intermodal Excellence (IMX), an initiative the railroad recently launched as a pilot program on its Halifax, Nova Scotia-to-Chicago corridor.

CN officials believe IMX will enable the railroad to improve intermodal service and cut costs.

"We aim to smooth intermodal demand with day-of-week pricing and focus sales growth on off-peak days," says CN spokesman Mark Hallman.

The railroad plans to provide pre-defined daily train capacity, and slot, gate and equipment reservations.

On Feb. 12, CN President and Chief Executive Officer E. Hunter Harrison will discuss IMX as part of his presentation before Deutsche Bank Securities' 2003 Global Transportation Conference in Naples, Fla.
