UTU yardmasters ratify CSXT contract

United Transportation Union-represented yardmasters Aug. 29 ratified an agreement with CSX Transportation that includes alternative compensation provisions and productivity improvements. (A tentative agreement was reached Aug. 2.)

During negotiations, CSXT and UTU used National Mediation Board's Interest-Based Bargaining (IBB) program, which promotes cooperation.

Through IBB, both parties meet to outline problems, discuss their interests associated with the issues and develop solutions by brainstorming options.

Although several parties have used IBB to negotiate parts of contracts, CSXT and UTU are the first in the railroad industry to use the program from beginning to ratification, according to an NMB statement.
