Canadian regional railway association joins advisory council

Association of Regional Railways of Canada (ARRC) recently joined Canada's Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) General Policy Advisory Council, which comprises shippers, carriers, government agencies and emergency-response firms involved in handling, shipping and transporting hazardous materials.

The council enables members to exchange ideas and information to improve hazardous-material transportation, acts as a liaison with Transport Canada on legislative and regulatory matters, and provides information and expert advice to Canada's Minister of Transport and related officials.

ARRC officials believe the organization's council participation will help ensure its members receive current information on TDG regulations and directives, according to a prepared statement.

Gerry Rath, OmniTRAX Canada's director of safety, was named ARRC's council representative; Bill Danks, BC Rail Ltd.'s supervisor-regulatory compliance and training, was named alternate representative.

Members of ARRC, formed in 2001 to promote Canadian regional and short-line railroads' interests, include BC Rail, Hudson Bay Railway, The Carlton Trail Railway and Ferroequus Railway Co. Ltd.
