UTU ratifies CN deal covering 320 conductors

United Transportation Union members July 31 ratified a two-year collective agreement with Canadian National Railway Co. effective Aug. 1.

The agreement, which applies to 320 conductors on CN's Wisconsin Central Division (WCD), preserves work-rule flexibility and implements an hourly rate — a change from the rail industry's traditional mileage- and rule-based compensation system — for operating employees.

The pact follows other recent agreements: Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers members July 29 ratified a three-year deal covering 415 locomotive engineers working on CN's former Illinois Central properties; UTU members July 30 tentatively agreed to a five-year pact covering 68 workers on CN’s Northern Quebec Territory; and BLE members in March ratified a three-year agreement covering 310 WCD workers.
