BNSF grows wheat business east of the Mississippi River

Burlington Northern Santa Fe recently began moving wheat to Milner Milling Inc.'s new flour mill in Wheat Way, Ala., near Birmingham — the first mill the railroad's served east of the Mississippi River.

The mill plans to receive about 2,000 annual carloads of winter wheat from Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma, and spring wheat from North and South Dakota.

"[The mill] gives farmers in the Midwest, and North and South Dakota access to a new market via BNSF," said John Davis, general director, agricultural products marketing, in a prepared statement.

BNSF plans to serve the mill through its "Scoot" program under which the railroad continuously cycles 65-car unit trains between origins and destinations. Milner Milling's facility is the first flour mill to qualify for the program.
