VIA Rail logged 2.8 percent ridership increase in Q2

During the second quarter, VIA Rail Canada Inc. carried 939,000 passengers, marking a 2.8 percent increase compared with ridership in the same period last year.

The passenger railroad reported revenue of $70 million (in Canadian dollars) compared with $65 million second-quarter 2015, according to a VIA press release.

The number of passenger-miles rose 3.6 percent to 207 million.

Also during the quarter, VIA Rail's requirement for government funding fell to $86.1 million, a slight decrease compared with $86.4 million last year, according to the railroad's second-quarter report.

In addition, the railroad increased capacity on high-demand routes and added more departures on key routes to offer passengers more flexibility, VIA Rail officials said.

Over the past two years, the railroad has shifted toward becoming a more customer-focused organization, said VIA Rail President and Chief Executive Officer Yves Desjardins-Siciliano.

"This change has been a key part of VIA Rail's modernization and is at the heart of our recent successes," Desjardins-Siciliano said. "More Canadians are choosing a greener, smarter way to travel by making a habit of taking the train."
