Canadian Pacific Railway recently updated its three-year network plan to address changes in the grain-handling industry. The Class I added 10 low-volume branch lines in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta (totaling more than 400 track miles) to its list of proposed line abandonments.

Under the Canada Transportation Act (CTA), CPR must offer the branches to interested short lines or government bodies before abandoning the lines.

The abandonments would enable the railroad to direct resources to other lines in each province that are increasing traffic — such as grain and potash carloads — and need additional capacity, according to a prepared statement.
