Yesterday, Norfolk Southern Corp. announced a U.S. district court approved a class action settlement under which the railroad agreed to provide restitution for minor personal injuries, property damage, business and wage losses, and other expenses caused by the Jan. 6 derailment in Graniteville, S.C. The accident — which released hazardous materials — killed nine people and injured more than 500.

Class action members can submit a claim form to a claims settlement office until Sept. 15.

“This settlement will resolve the majority of claims resulting from the derailment without the delay and expense of lengthy litigation,” said Bob Wells, NS general manager of casualty claims, in a prepared statement.
