TransLink logged 98.4 million boardings in the first quarter, marking a 5.6 percent increase over the same period in 2016. The number of average weekday boardings also rose across all the agency's transit modes except for the West Coast Express commuter-rail system, which reported a 5.8 percent decrease. Average weekday boardings on SkyTrain's Expo and Millennium lines jumped 13.8 percent, while ridership on the Canada Line grew 7 percent. TransLink attributed the ridership increases to several factors, including increased service hours this year, higher fuel prices and overall economic growth. Additionally, the agency in December opened the Evergreen extension to the Millennium Line. In 2016, TransLink reported record ridership of 385 million total boardings.
