Canadian, South African rail associations team up to exchange expertise

Railway Association of Canada (RAC) and Railroad Association of South Africa (RRA) June 28 agreed in principle to jointly promote transportation policies and share rail-related technical expertise.

The associations plan soon to sign a formal agreement, which would build on an earlier Declaration of Intent Canada's Ministry of Transport and South Africa's National Department of Transport signed to jointly enhance railroad safety and improve cross-border railway operations.

"We will share experiences, intelligence and technical information to
achieve international best practices and efficiencies in the fields of
overland transport planning, operations and intermodal," said Bill Rowat, RAC president and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement.

RAC represents 56 freight and passenger railroads; RRA comprises 25 corporate members representing railroads — including freight (Spoornet), passenger (Metrorail) and tourist railways — and large suppliers.
