WC workers back BMWE as union representative

National Mediation Board (NMB) June 26 certified Brotherhood of
Maintenance of Way Employes (BMWE)
to represent 473 track, bridge and dock workers on Canadian National Railway Co.'s Wisconsin Central Division (WC).

NMB conducted a card check, which confirmed that 55 percent of WC's eligible workers signed cards recognizing BMWE as their union of choice.

WC's maintenance-of-way employees were unorganized more than 16 years because of a series of line sales by former SOO Line, Chicago & North Western and Fox River Valley railroads.

"We are glad to welcome these workers back into the BMWE and look forward to their full participation in the union," said BMWE Director of
Organizing Paul Swanson in a prepared statement.

WC locals in Escanaba, Mich., and Eau Claire, Green Bay and Fond du Lac, Wis., already elected local officers and established bargaining committees in preparation for contract negotiations with CN, which BMWE officials believe soon will commence.
