Norfolk Southern Railway June 20 presented three employees the Thoroughbred Award, which recognizes workers' contributions to the railroad that improve customer service or build revenue.

From NS' coal business group, Manager Utility, North Chuck Fike (Philadelphia) and Manager Resource Development Jerry Nassar (Pittsburgh) were honored for developing a rail-to-truck coal transfer facility in Blairsville, Pa. The facility handles rail-originated coal for the Homer City, Pa., generating station, one of the world's largest coal-fired power plants.

NS also recognized John Schaal, national account manager for metals and construction (Pittsburgh), who developed a competitive service package for a large supplier of steel bars used in automotive, agricultural, aerospace and other industries.

"These individuals are examples of what innovative thinking, creative solutions and dedication to goals can do for our company," said David Goode, NS chairman, president and chief executive officer during the award ceremony, according to a prepared statement.
