Canadian Pacific Railway recently implemented measures aimed at expanding its role in the Equipment Management Program (EMP) — an interline domestic container service designed to facilitate equipment interchange between member railroads, including Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway.


CPR Nov. 9 announced that it's currently contributing its own containers to EMP and extending the program to key markets. The Class I's network serves Montreal; Toronto; Vancouver, British Columbia; Calgary, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Chicago; Minneapolis; Philadelphia; and Newark, N.J.


Officials of CPR — which also participates in the North American Container System intermodal equipment interchange — believe the railroad's expanded EMP role will provide customers greater flexibility and better access to more modern equipment, and help EMP partners gain efficiencies by moving more container traffic via doublestack networks.


"This interline initiative … provides shippers with seamless operations for improved market reach," said Lawre Allen, CPR vice president, intermodal & automotive, in a prepared statement.
