Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) is seeking letters of interest from qualified firms to maintain and provide rail service over the Arbor Rail Line, which runs 57 miles from Collegeview to Nebraska City, Neb.
Letters should contain a firm's background, history and qualifications, according to American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's bi-monthly newsletter released Jan. 7. Letters are due to OPPD by 5 p.m. (CST) Jan. 17.
In February, the power district plans to mail requests for proposals to qualified and interested firms.
The district is seeking a common carrier and/or contract rail-service provider to operate the line for up to five years, beginning Jan. 1, 2004. The contract might include a provision to move OPPD's unit coal trains from Lincoln, Neb., to the Nebraska City Power Station and provide service to other shippers along the Arbor Line.
OPPD also is seeking a contractor to maintain the line for up to five years, beginning Jan. 1, 2004. The district annually moves about 2.5 million tons of coal over the line to the Nebraska City station via Union Pacific Railroad or Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
