An arbitrator might issue a ruling as early as Jan. 10 regarding Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers' and United Transportation Union's dispute over locomotive remote-control (LRC) operations, according to a news item posted Jan. 6 on UTU's Web site.
Last year, BLE, UTU and National Carriers' Conference Committee (representing six Class Is) agreed to resolve the dispute through arbitration. Oral arguments were presented in November.
BLE officials believe locomotive engineers should operate remote controls.
In October 2001, UTU officials obtained signed letters of intent from all U.S. Class Is that would assign remote-control operations to UTU-represented workers; in August, UTU members ratified a new contract with NCCC that includes LRC provisions.
