Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Feb. 6 awarded more than $900,000 in Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP) funds to 10 railroad projects aimed at preserving freight service and creating more than 350 new jobs.
"Keeping short-line and regional railroads in good operating condition means we're keeping the freight moving, and supporting employers, jobs and families," said Transportation Secretary Bradley Mallory in a prepared statement, referring to some of the state's 70 operating railroads.
PennDOT awarded RFAP funds for the following rail-related projects:
• Gettysburg and Northern Railroad Co., $38,895, to construction an additional yard track;
• Pittsburgh Intermodal Terminals Inc., $100,000, to replace cross and switch ties, and rebuild track;
• Carbon County Railroad Commission, $79,275, to raise, line and surface track;
• Bisconti Distribution Center, $99,200, to rehabilitate a truck transloading area, level a railroad spur and pave an access road to its distribution warehouse;
• Mount Union Connecting Railroad Co., $158,844, to rehabilitate track to service a new plastic-bag manufacturing plant;
• Fisher Mining Co., $84,399, to renew track to support unit coal trains;
• Monroe County Railroad Authority, $151,110, to rehabilitate a siding to support an interchange between Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway;
• Moran Industries Inc., $75,065, to construct a switch track to access NS' rail line and serve a warehouse;
• Delaware River Stevedores Inc., $41,300, to construct a siding to increase the efficiency of its terminal transloading operations; and
• Bowater Inc./Nuwater Paper, $74,375, to construct a siding to service Nuway Paper's facility.
