WSOR targets fuel savings by purchasing enhanced diesel

Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Co. (WSOR) Sept. 18 committed to purchasing enhanced diesel from Solpower Corp. for use on the 650-mile regional's entire locomotive fleet.

Soltron™ enhanced diesel is designed to reduce smoke and some air pollutants emitted by locomotives.

"After treating more than 1 million gallons of diesel with Soltron in our locomotives, we determined that our fuel savings were approximately 9 percent," said WSOR Superintendent of Transportation Mike McConville in a prepared statement.

Solpower officials claim WSOR is the first railroad to use Soltron, which might help U.S. rails annually save 250 million gallons from the more than 2.7 billion gallons of diesel railroads consume each year.
