United Transportation Union Sept. 10 reached its first-ever collective agreement with New Brunswick East Coast Railway, which operates 311 track miles between Campbellton and Pacific Junction, New Brunswick.

The three-year agreement — which ends Dec. 31, 2003 — would cover 15 rail traffic controllers and customer service agents.

Subject to a member ratification vote, the pact calls for a 2 percent annual wage increase retroactive to Jan. 1, an additional $750 lump-sum payment, and more comprehensive benefits including dental care, material change protection and profit sharing.

Employees of New Brunswick East Coast Railway, which is owned by Quebec Railway Corp., formed a UTU local Jan. 26.
