Grupo TMM joint venture to expand Mexican yard, port — and TFM's intermodal business

Grupo Transportación Maritima Mexicana S.A. de C.V. May 23 announced that TMM Ports and Terminal Operations — its joint venture with marine-terminal and intermodal-services management firm Stevedoring Services of America — received approval from Mexico's Secretary of Communication and Transportation to add 24 acres of land and 1,650 feet of waterfront to the Grupo TMM's Manzanillo, Mexico, yard and port.
The expanded yard and port berths, which Grupo TMM plans to complete by year end, would enable TMM Ports and Terminals to increase container business as a port of entry into the United States and Mexico, and serve as a transload Pacific hub center for trans-canal moves, and feeder ships moving to and from North America and South America.
The larger facility also would bring more intermodal business to Grupo TMM's railroad arm, TFM S.A. de C.V.
"We believe we can make Manzanillo a much larger contributor to our business, likely doubling the contribution from the current level during
the next two years as a result of these expansions," said Grupo TMM President Javier Segovia in a prepared statement.
