United Transportation Union members might vote in early July on the union's tentative agreement with National Carriers’ Conference Committee (NCCC), which would cover wages, entry pay, work rules, health-care coverage and remote-control technology issues.
UTU officers and general chairpersons plan to assemble in Washington, D.C., May 23 to discuss the agreement and meet with congressional leaders.
Following the meeting, UTU general chairpersons would submit written questions within 15 days to NCCC regarding contract interpretation; the 30 U.S. railroads represented by NCCC — including five Class Is — then could respond in writing.
UTU after that would distribute questions and answers to union members, along with the complete proposed contract; members would have 21 days to study the agreement and vote.
UTU officials, who believe the entire ratification process will be completed in late July, plan to release agreement details after May 23.
