Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Norfolk Southern Railway April 22 began offering coast-to-coast, guaranteed intermodal service between Southern California and the Northeast.
Shippers for a premium can purchase seamless, coast-to-coast
guaranteed domestic- and international-container service between San Bernardino, Calif., and Harrisburg, Pa. BNSF and NS will provide a full refund for each load that doesn't meet a scheduled availability time for customer pick-up.
The new service — which extends BNSF's guaranteed-service network to 16 lanes — is designed to attract a greater share of freight moving over the road between Southern California and the Northeast, said Steve Branscum, BNSF group vice president, consumer products marketing, in a prepared statement.
The service also extends BNSF's and NS' intermodal-product partnerships: The Class Is in May 2000 began a non-stop, transcontinental container service between the West Coast, Southwest and Southeast; in April 2001 launched a non-stop container service between California and the East Coast; and in August 2001 started a seamless, coast-to-coast trailer service between Southern California, and both Rutherford, Pa., and Croxton, N.J.
