The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking public comment on its draft 2020-2024 transportation program.

The proposed program outlines mobility initiatives, revenue and specific projects planned for the state over the next five years.

Included in the draft is a call for preserving and enhancing Michigan's intercity passenger-rail services. In fiscal-year 2020, MDOT plans to invest $20 million in three Amtrak-operated routes in the city.

In addition, the department plans to invest $45 million for maintenance and capital improvements on the state-owned Kalamazoo-Dearborn corridor.

Other rail projects mentioned in the plan include safety projects to reduce motorist risks at grade crossings, including warning device enhancements and crossing eliminations.

Department officials are accepting comments on the document until Aug. 30. The State Transportation Commission is expected to approve the final plan in October.
