Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) Nov. 28 announced that R.C. Matney was awarded the organization's Silver King Pin, which recognizes an individual IANA considers to have made an outstanding career-long contribution to advancing intermodalism.
Currently chairman of Exel Transportation Services Inc., Matney in 1967 began his transportation career in over-the-road trucking, later co-founding National Piggyback Services Inc., which in 1980 was acquired by BRAE Corp. In 1983, he became chief executive officer of newly formed BRAE Surface Transportation Group.
Matney then in 1987 formed Mark VII Transportation Co., which exclusively marketed RoadRailer® technology. In 1993, he became chairman and CEO of MNX Inc., which in 1989 purchased Mark VII, later changing the company's name to Mark VII Inc. Ocean Group in 1999 acquired Mark VII, merging it with Exel PLC and forming Exel Transportation.
IANA presented Matney the Silver King Pin Nov. 13 at the organization's annual intermodal conference and membership meeting in Charlotte, N.C.
