Canada's Minister of Industry Brian Tobin Nov. 16 granted Cloud Transport $47,000 — through Industry Canada's Aboriginal Business Canada program — to help finance the company's planned road-to-rail transportation service.
Using custom-fitted, self-loading trucks designed to travel by road or rail, Cloud Transport plans to offer transportation services to Western Canadian railroads, contractors, oilfield service companies, loggers and construction firms.
An Aboriginal firm, Cloud Transport plans to invest $188,000 in the service, designed to cost one-third less than current rail rates.
"Not only does this investment create a new, diversified and innovative transportation service in Western Canada, it also demonstrates that the government of Canada is working with Aboriginal entrepreneurs in recognition of their contribution to Canada's economy," said Canadian Sen. Ross Fitzpatrick in a prepared statement.
