The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) rose 0.9 percent in June from May, rising for the second consecutive month, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported earlier this week.
The index is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry. It measures the month-to-month changes in for-hire freight shipments by mode of transportation in tons and ton-miles, which are combined into one index. The TSI consists of data from the trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight.
The TSI's 0.9 percent gain in June was due to growth in rail intermodal, rail carload, trucking (the largest mode) and pipeline moves, despite declines in air freight and water traffic, BTS officials said in a press release.
From June 2019 to June 2020, the index fell 7.6 percent compared to a rise of 1.2 percent from June 2018 to June 2019, and a rise of 8.7 percent from June 2017 to June 2018, they said.
The level of for-hire freight shipments in June measured by the TSI (128.3) was 9.1 percent below the all-time high level of 141.2 measured in August 2019, BTS officials said.
