In December 2020, tie production rose 10.7% to 1.6 million units and purchases climbed 39.2% to 1.5 million units compared with November 2020 levels, according to the Railway Tie Association's (RTA) latest market report.
Year over year, production decreased 2.6% and purchases increased 31.7%.
Inventory levels rose 0.6% in December from November, and increased 10.7% from the prior year's level.
In fourth-quarter 2020, production declined 12.7% to 4.8 million units compared with Q3 2020, but increased 0.1% when compared with Q4 2019's level. Purchases in Q4 fell 25.2% to 4 million units from the previous quarter, but climbed 19.3% year over year.
