advertisement

On Aug. 21, former Vermont Railway President John Pennington died in his Shelburne, Vt., home, according to the American Short Line & Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA). He was 75.

Pennington began his railroading career as a teenager, working as a yard clerk for the Central New Jersey Railway. He served in various capacities — including sales and traffic management — for a number of railroads for the next 20 years before joining Vermont Railway as chief financial officer and manager of legal affairs. In 1999, Pennington retired as president emeritus and director.

He was active in the short-line industry and served on ASLRRA's board. Pennington also served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1957, fighting in the Korean War and reaching the rank of sergeant.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, two daughters and four grandchildren. The family asks that donations in Pennington's memory be made to either the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1460, Williston, VT 05482, or Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446.
