ASLRRA subcommittee analyzes event-reporting equipment

An American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) subcommittee met late last month to begin identifying equipment available for train crews to report events.

ASLRRA’s Remote Computing Working Committee is responsible for identifying solutions that non-reporting railroads can use to begin reporting, and how those solutions can be beneficial to railroads that currently are reporting — including analyzing cost savings resulting from reduced errors and determining how real-time reporting helps grow business.

During the meeting, members of a short-line focus group discussed their needs for remote computing. Representatives from the East Jersey Railroad, SMS/Penn Jersey Lines, Southern Railroad Co. of New Jersey and Morristown & Erie Railway provided information on how they do business, their future needs and how having a computer for train crews can help their railroads.
