ARCI: Rail-car orders rose, deliveries fell in Q4

Rail-car orders in fourth-quarter 2021 totaled 13,477 units, up from 8,607 units in third-quarter 2021, according to data from the Railway Supply Institute's American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI).

A year ago, Q4 2020 rail-car orders stood at 3,397 units.

Car deliveries in Q4 2021 decreased to 8,161 units from 8,298 in Q3, but increased from 6,216 in Q4 2020.

Full-year 2021 orders rose to 37,562 units from 17,275 in 2020 and 37,196 in 2019. Full-year 2021 deliveries fell to 29,280 units from 33,417 in 2020 and 58,026 in 2019.

Meanwhile, the rail-car backlog stood at 42,993 units on Jan. 1, 2022, compared with 34,598 on Jan. 1, 2021.
