RailPower Technologies Corp. recently reached an agreement with Swedish Train Technology (STT) under which STT will provide locomotive conversions of RailPower's hybrid Green Goat® switchers in Scandinavia. The companies plan to sign a partnership contract within the next few weeks.

STT reconditions and refurbishes diesel locomotives, rail cars and maintenance-of-way equipment.

"This is RailPower's first major partnership in Europe and one that will be focused firmly on Scandinavia, where there is a strong drive to introduce locomotive technology that also brings improvements in performance, noise reductions, fuel savings and emissions reductions," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement.

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, 2,000-horsepower Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and cut fuel use about 50 percent compared with conventional 1,000- to 2,000-horsepower switchers.

"RailPower's hybrid locomotive technology has a significant market opportunity in Scandinavia, where eco-friendly technology is an important consideration," said STT Managing Director Stellan Hagman.
