AAR: Another week of carload gains, intermodal traffic losses

For the week ending Nov. 5, U.S. railroads logged 502,106 carloads and intermodal units, down 0.4% year over year, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.

Carloads totaled 243,276 units, up 3.2%, while intermodal volume totaled 258,830 units, down 3.6%.

Seven of the 10 carload commodity groups tracked by the AAR posted gains, including nonmetallic minerals, motor vehicles and parts and coal. Groups that posted declines included chemicals and forest products.

For the week, Canadian railroads reported 82,653 carloads, up 3.8%, and 68,784 intermodal units, down 6.2% on a year-over-year basis. Mexican railroads registered 20,106 carloads, down 3.8%, and 14,729 intermodal units, down 2.7%.

Volume in the week ending Nov. 5 for 12 North American reporting railroads reached 346,035 carloads, up 2.9%, and 342,343 intermodal units, down 4.1% year over year.

North American rail volume through 2022’s first 44 weeks totaled 29,879,757 carloads and intermodal units, down 2%.
