BTS: Transborder freight moved by rail surged in September


Freight moved by all modes of transportation between the three nations in September soared 22.6% year over year to $133.9 billion worth of goods.

Transborder freight moved by rail between the United States, Canada and Mexico surged 14.9% to $16.9 billion worth of goods in September compared with the same month in 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

Freight moved by all modes of transportation between the three nations during the month soared 22.6% year over year to $133.9 billion worth of goods.

Transborder freight moved by rail between the United States and Canada in September was $9.2 billion; between the United States and Mexico, it was $7.7 billion.

The top three rail commodities moved by rail over the U.S.-Canada borders were vehicles and parts, valued at $3.1 billion; mineral fuel, valued at $900 million; and wood products, valued at $600 million.

The top three commodities moved by rail over the U.S.-Mexico border during the month were vehicles and parts, valued at $3.7 billion; computers and parts, valued at $600 million; and beverages, valued at $400 million.

The top three rail ports in terms of the value of goods moved between the United States and Canada were in Port Huron and Detroit, Michigan; and International Falls, Minnesota. The top three rail ports in terms of goods moved between the United States and Mexico were in Laredo and Eagle Pass, Texas; and Nogales, Arizona.
