Class I employment rose nearly 6% in June

Class Is operating in the United States employed 122,864 people in June, a 0.39% increase from the employment level in May and a 5.69% increase from the June 2022 mark, according to Surface Transportation Board data.

Five of six employment categories logged increases in June from May’s level. They were: professional and administrative, up 2.49% to 10,430 employees; executives, officials and staff assistants, 0.54% to 8,211; transportation (train and engine), 0.33% to 52,214; maintenance of equipment and stores, 0.15% to 18,294; and maintenance of way and structures, 0.01% to 28,912.

Year over year, all categories increased: train and engine staff rose 8.6%; executives, officials and staff, 5.77%; maintenance of equipment and stores, 5.25%; professional and administrative, 4.88%; transportation (other than train and engine), 4.66%; and maintenance of way and structures, 1.47%.
