Yesterday, Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) Inc. announced BHP Billiton Iron Ore Pty. Ltd. will take delivery of 10 SD70ACe locomotives early next year.

To be built at EMD’s London, Ontario, plant, the locomotives will be used at BHP’s northwestern Australia mining operations. EDI Rail, which represents Electro-Motive in Australia, will commission and service the locomotives.

The 4,300-horsepower SD70ACe features the 710 Series diesel engine and an AC traction system to provide better wheel-rail traction in heavy haul service, and meets the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Tier 2" emission standards. For BHP’s units, EMD will design an isolated cab to improve operator comfort.

In late 2004, BHP ordered 14 SD70ACe locomotives for its northwestern Australia mining operations. EMD delivered the units this year.
