For the second year in a row, Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX are part of USA Today's America's Climate Leaders list for 2024.

The list recognizes U.S.-based companies that have made significant progress in reducing their greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions intensity. The 2024 rankings cover the period from 2020 to 2022, reflecting each company's efforts during those years.

"CSX is proud to be recognized by USA Today for our commitment to improving our carbon footprint through meaningful emission reductions," CSX President and CEO said John Hinrichs in a press release.

"We are honored to once again be recognized as one of USA Today’s America's Climate Leaders,” said NS Chief Sustainability Officer Josh Raglin in a news release. “We understand the critical role we play in reducing supply chain emissions and fostering a transition to a low-carbon economy.”

In 2023, NS released its first Climate Transition Plan, acknowledging climate-related risks and opportunities to reduce GHG emissions and responding to the evolving regulatory and market landscape surrounding climate change.

CSX's GHG emissions reduction goal is one of the most aggressive in the transportation industry, targeting a 37.3% reduction by 2030, according to a CSX news release.
