Short line association seeking applicants for women's scholarship program

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) is accepting applications for the Susan C. Murray Memorial Women’s Scholarship Program until March 1.

The scholarship — which provides $2,000 per academic year for up to four years — is open to daughters and granddaughters of an employee working for an ASLRRA railroad or associate member.

Commonwealth Business Media created the program in 2003 to honor the late Susan Murray, a former vice president of the company’s Directories Division and ASLRRA exhibition manger. Murray helped grow the association’s annual exhibition from 40 tabletop displays in 1987 to the “premier exhibition dedicated to the short line and regional railroad industry,” according to the association. She also served as a mentor to many people in the short-line industry, particularly women railroaders.

ASLRRA will award the scholarships at its annual convention to be held April 23-25 in Orlando.
