BTS: Transborder freight moved by rail rose in May

Transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation between the United States and Canada and Mexico rose 2% to $139 billion worth of goods in May compared to the value of freight moved in May 2023, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported this week.

Freight moved by all modes between the United States and Canada was valued at $66 billion, down 2.4% from May 2023. Freight between the United States and Mexico was $73 billion, up 6.3% from a year ago.

Rail, the second-most used mode, moved $18.5 billion worth of goods during the month, up 4.3% year over year, according to a BTS press release.

Freight moved by rail between the United States and Canada in May was valued at $9.9 billion worth of goods, while the value of goods moved between the United States and Mexico was valued at $8.5 billion.

Detroit, Port Huron and International Falls were the top rail connection ports for U.S. freight flows with Canada; while Laredo, Eagle Pass and Nogales were the top rail connection ports with Mexico.

The top three rail commodities moved between the United States and Canada in May were vehicles and parts, valued at $4.2 billion; mineral fuel, $800 million; and plastics, $600 million.
