Minneapolis to seek federal grant for grade separation project

Minneapolis city officials are preparing a federal grant application to study the possibility of building grade separations, such as overpasses or underpasses, at the Canadian Pacific Kansas City crossings at Humboldt Avenue N, 45th Ave N and Lyndale Avenue N.

The grade separations could eliminate the need for vehicles and trains to cross paths directly, improving safety and traffic flow in the area, city officials said in a press release.

Minneapolis Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw, Minneapolis Public Works and engineering firm TKDA representatives held a public meeting on the proposed project last week.

The project's purpose is to reduce motor vehicle-train conflicts, improve traffic flow and reduce traffic delays.

The city expects to learn if the grant application is successful in spring 2025. If the application is approved, engineering concepts then will be developed and the community will have the opportunity to provide input, city officials said.
