Australia's Pacific National to add three 'slave' locomotives to its fleet

Earlier this month, Pacific National Pty. Ltd. announced it will acquire three new XRB Class locomotives. The Australian railroad plans to use the 3,000-horsepower locomotives as “slave” or booster units on long-distance intermodal trains.

The cab-less locomotives feature an additional cooling fan and improved braking design.

“The current high demand for efficient and reliable intermodal locomotives will grow as freight services expand, and the XRBs offer one solution to freeing up traditional cab locomotives,” Pacific National officials said in a prepared statement.

Australia’s largest private freight railroad, Pacific National operates in all the nation’s states and the Northern Territory, and manages a fleet of 1,000 locomotives.
