Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the approval of 30 freight-rail improvement projects, while the State Transportation Commission approved $55 million in state funding to be split among the projects.

The funding comes from the state's Rail Transportation Assistance Program and the Rail Freight Assistance Program.

CSX received the largest grant, at $13.1 million, to rehabilitate the 25th Street viaduct in Philadelphia County. Other major grant recipients include Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, which received $5.8 million to rehabilitate six bridges in Allegheny, Washington, Fayette and Westmoreland counties; and NorthPoint Development LLC, which received $3.8 million to add 13,350 feet of new track at the Kinder Morgan terminal rail yard in Bucks County.

Meanwhile, the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) Rail Service Improvement Program awarded $13 million in grants for 14 rail improvement projects. The program requires a 30% participant match, resulting in an investment of $18 million across the state.

The largest grant of $2.2 million went to Seaboard Energy to expand and improve rail infrastructure at its renewable diesel facility in Hugoton, Stevens County. Over $1.9 million was awarded to Cimarron Valley Railroad, which plans to upgrade rail infrastructure between Hugoton and Satanta in Stevens County. KYLE Railroad received grants for two rail improvement projects, including $1.3 million rehabilitate its Phillipsburg Yard in Phillips County; and $1.2 million for the second phase of its Yuma sub-rail replacement project in Cloud County.
