Norfolk Southern Railway is launching another short-line-like business unit to manage operations and marketing in two northeastern states. The Class I recently created the Delmarva Business Unit (DBU) to improve customer service, increase operating efficiency and develop new business in Delaware and Maryland.

A dedicated local management team and more than 115 employees will be responsible for operating 191 track miles between Newark and Wilmington, Del., Wilmington and Pocomoke City, Md., and Harrington and Frankford, Del. The DBU’s main terminals will be located in Harrington, Wilmington and Newark, and the unit will interchange with three short lines.

An internal unit with its own budget, the DBU will be linked to NS’ centralized dispatching, customer service and operating systems. The unit will be similar to the East Carolina Business Unit, which NS launched in 2002.

“This business model incorporates the flexibility and local focus of a small railroad, supported by the industrial development and technological resources of a major carrier,” said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement.
