During the next two months, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is encouraging universities nationwide to compete for $6 million in federal transportation research funds. The department plans to select 10 colleges to serve as Regional University Transportation Centers (UTC) for a three-year period. The UTC program is administered by the USDOT's Research and Innovative Technology Administration.

Applications for the merit-based competition are due June 1; forms, instructions and selection criteria are available online at http://utc.dot.gov or www.grants.gov. USDOT officials will choose the 10 schools by July 14.

“These unique institutions … are vital partners in solving challenges ranging from traffic congestion to safety,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta in a prepared statement. “We are looking to our next generation of transportation pioneers to help keep America moving safely, reliably and efficiently through research and technology innovation.”

The current UTCs are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, City College of New York, Pennsylvania State University, University of Tennessee, University of Wisconsin, Texas A&M University, Iowa State University, North Dakota State University, University of California and University of Washington.
