Pacific Harbor Line Inc. (PHL) recently became the first U.S. short line to join the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership, according to PHL’s April newsletter.

Under the voluntary federal program, the EPA provides transportation companies incentives to measure and reduce their fuel consumption and air emissions. An Anacostia & Pacific Co. Inc. subsidiary, PHL plans to measure its environmental performance with the EPA’s SmartWay Transport Fleet Logistics Energy and Environmental Tracking (FLEET) performance model, and improve performance within three years.

After attaining a required FLEET score, the 85-mile short line would qualify for and be able to display the official SmartWay Transport Partner logo. PHL’s San Pedro Bay, Calif., port complex interchange partners, BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad, already are SmartWay partners.
