Last month, Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s (GWI) North American subsidiaries moved 65,981 carloads, a 14.2 percent increase compared with April 2005.

However, “same railroad” carloads — which exclude traffic moved by First Coast Railroad and former Rail Management Corp. railroads GWI acquired last year — decreased 5.9 percent. Still recovering from Hurricane Stan-related infrastructure damage, the Mexico region moved 1,011 fewer carloads compared with April 2005.

In Australia, GWI’s half-owned Australian Railroad Group moved 79,657 carloads, a 2 percent increase compared with April 2005. Grain traffic increased by 3,157 carloads but iron ores traffic decreased by 1,561 carloads.

Meanwhile, RailAmerica Inc.’s April carloads totaled 104,651 units, a 6.6 percent decrease compared with April 2005. On a same railroad basis, the short-line holding company’s carloads declined 5.4 percent to 101,654 units. Eleven out of 14 commodity groups registered traffic declines compared with April 2005.
