AAR data: About halfway through 2006, U.S. roads continue to move more carloads

During the week ending June 24, coal and grain carload gains helped U.S. railroads increase overall originated carloads 1.8 percent compared with the same 2005 week, according to the Association of American Railroads.

Weekly intermodal volume totaling 245,145 units increased 7.9 percent compared with similar 2005 data.

During 2006’s first 25 weeks, U.S. roads originated 8.5 million carloads, up 1.4 percent, and 5.8 million trailers and containers, up 6.5 percent compared with the same 2005 period. Total estimated volume of 833.1 billion ton-miles rose 2.6 percent.

Canadian railroads also had a good week, boosting originated carloads 2.1 percent to 76,417 units and increasing intermodal loads 9.7 percent to 45,830 units compared with the same 2005 week

Through 25 weeks, Canadian roads originated 1.9 million carloads, down 2 percent, and 1.1 million trailers and containers, up 5.8 percent compared with similar 2005 data.

On a combined cumulative-volume basis through 25 weeks, 13 reporting U.S. and Canadian railroads originated 10.3 million carloads, up 0.8 percent, and 6.9 million trailers and containers, up 6.4 percent compared with 2005’s first 25 weeks.

In Mexico, Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. reported total weekly carloads of 11,156 units, a 1.4 percent decrease compared with the same 2005 week. Total intermodal volume of 4,273 trailers and containers declined 10.8 percent. Through 25 weeks, the railroad reported total volume of 285,180 cars, down 5.4 percent, and 97,758 trailers and containers, down 6.8 percent compared with similar 2005 data.
