The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently awarded a $502,000 grant to the University of Illinois at Chicago to develop three-dimensional software that can simulate forces involved in train derailments.

The university will use proceeds to expand upon work conducted for the Systematic Analysis of Multi-Body Systems/Rail project, which began in 1999.

The FRA also awarded a $1.97 million grant to the University of Texas at Austin Center for Electromagnetics to research, develop and demonstrate an Advanced Locomotive Propulsion system for high-speed passenger trains. The system would enable locomotives to reach higher speeds without the need for electronic equipment installed along tracks.

The grant is the final installment of FRA funding for the project, which also began in 1999.
