The U.S. Department of Transportation recently named Daniel Smith associate administrator for safety at the Federal Railroad Administration. He will report to Acting Administrator Robert Jamison.

During the past 12 years, Smith has served as the FRA's assistant chief counsel for safety, heading the administration's safety enforcement and civil penalty program. He has served the FRA since 1978. In 1999, Smith was appointed to the federal government's Senior Executive Service.
